I absolutely LOVE halloween but sadly here it’s not as celebrated in the US so I don’t have a very spooky post today. I think when I finally get to the US I want to be there on 31 Oct just to see all the cute kids running round in their costumes, ours is so naff in comparison.
I know everything’s so commercial here now but it doesn’t have to be, life is generally pretty crap so why can’t we at least have one day a year when we can have fun for no good reason? I remember dressing up as a ghost when I was about 7 or 8 and scaring our next door neighbour half to death cos no-one really did Halloween at that time. I had my sister with me as a mini ghost (she was about 3 or 4) and we must have looked so funny, shame there are no pics, Mother!!
Maybe it’s because we have Bonfire night instead, we can’t possibly have 2 fun days in a fortnight can we!? We’re English for godsake, we don’t do happy!
One thing we did do as kids but I don’t know if it still happens was Mischief Night…the day BEFORE bonfire night we all used to go out and do all kinds of mischief to the neighbours…all harmless generally &t I’m sure it was very annoying when I think about it now, but boy did we have a laugh! Our main onjective was to remove as many gateposts as we could and then reattach them to a completely different fence. Placing village benches in peoples gardens was also highly amusing too, as was moving “For Sale” notices to the wrong houses! Traditionally it was things like tying neighbours doorknobs together so they couldnt get out the front door and covering them in treacle and gooey stuff. The best bit about it all was being on the school bus the next morning and passing all the devastation on the school route, the bus would be in raptures, with the odd person waving a fist in anger at us all laughing. Sounds really cruel that we enforced such tyranny now but it really was meant as a fun thing. I think this was a regional thing as not many people I speak to outside this area have ever heard of it. My mum & dad had a milk round so they used to see it all before everyone else got up and I can always remember them coming back in the morning and telling me what the other villages had done, heh heh. I suppose if it still goes on now the chav idea of fun would be to hold the neighbours up at knifepoint while they steal the car and the telly, so maybe its a good thing it’s stopped! sigh. Everything gets ruined in the end doesnt it. Anyway I’m off to surf for some cool halloweeny stuff so have a great spooky day….
OMG, I always thought I was really techie with my PC but i am SO getting left behind these day with the invention of blogs, facebook and mp3’s – I don’t even use my mobile phone properly! We didn’t even use computers at my school, we had 3 in my last year you but you had to be a swottie maths club member to be able to use them and they were like these humongous beasts staring ominously from a locked computer room – us commoners getting only a mere glimpse of their looming grey screens when some dorky mathshead went in and out the room. Slightly unfair I know, but that is my memory! Anyway, the reason for these mumblings is my recent exploration of a) this blog and b) my new facebook and how addictive it all is. The few friends I do have seem to own great facebooks which are really exciting and they have friends who hug and everything and then they have myspace and they upload music and and and…it’s all too much for me, I’m out of my depth! Here I am, came in early to check my emails & do some work and I’ve spent an hour on facebook hugging people and throwing pumpkins and casting spells, with each click you get further and further away from what you originally set out to do! I’m starting to wonder if it’s some evil plan by world governments to steer us away from all the bad things going on in the world, already I go home on a night and wonder if Ive had a reply or a comment, it’s taking over me already and it’s just insane!! And here I am talking to myself, as usual!
note to self: at least it’s getting me up earlier in the mornings!
well, my first day of my new blog and I think I finally got it sussed, although it all looks pretty boring and I can’t believe anyone wants to read my dull escapades! Anyway, I’m here now, I just need to keep this thing updated although like I said before my life is work, work, work! Busy week this week with a few classes and a weekend demonstration so that will keep me amused. Had to tidy the workshop in the shop today – took about an hour and I’m still only halfway through, if only the ladies who came to class could see what it looks like when they’re not here!! It would certainly make them all feel much better about their own craft space I can tell you!
As I’ve had an admin/computer day I’m now freezing, can hrdly type my hands are so-o cold. Plus in the furore, I forgot to have a drink, breakfast or any lunch so I’m now starving! (why aren’t I like Kate Moss?? sob). Plus I have the delightful prospect of going to Morrisons on the way home to do food shopping and it’s the big new one so I won’t be able to find a thing. Still, I MUST get loo roll and now the clocks have gone back I’m getting an urge to make stews and start baking. That will please Kris, show me a man not driven by his stomach. hmm, that sounds like a good scrapbook theme to me….
